Artist Statment

Liam McGee is an artist working primarily in oil paint. His recent work is shaped by the influence of his relationship with his identical twin whose support was vital while growing up in Glasgow. This bond informed Liam’s early understanding of identity, revealing how a sense of self can form in relation to another person or an environment.
After leaving home and moving to Dundee for university, Liam became increasingly aware that the foundation of his identity had been constructed in relation to his twin. This realisation led him to explore broader philosophical questions surrounding identity and the forces that shape how we understand ourselves.
In his studio practice, Liam’s paintings often begin as expressive, layered abstractions from which figures gradually emerge. By allowing some areas to remain abstract while others become more defined, he reflects the experience of being an identical twin - sometimes depicting the two brothers as one, blurring the boundary between self and other. These works are not intended as portraits of twins, but as attempts to capture the connections we form with others who help shape our sense of self. The works are snapshots of a shared psychological space, where identities overlap and influence one another.
